چکیده

Introduction The mylohyoid muscle in the floor of the mouth forms part of the oral diaphragm. It also forms the floor of the submental triangle, the sides of which are formed by anterior bellies of the digastric muscles. There are a number of reports which suggest variations of the digastric muscle to be more frequent in comparison to variations of the mylohyoid muscle [1, 2]. The present report describes a rare combination of an accessory anterior belly of digastric and mylohyoid. The anterior bellies of the digastric and the mylohyoid muscles have a common embryological origin, being derived from the first pharyngeal arch [3]. Hence digastric–mylohyoid muscle variations may occur simultaneously [4]. The significance of such variations reinforces the need for awareness of the possibility of variants presenting in the submental region.

A case of a bilateral accessory digastric muscle.

Abnormalities of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle are rare but have received increased attention by radiologists in recent years in an attempt to avoid confusion with submental cysts or enlarged submental lymph nodes on CT or MR images. We present a case of bilateral accessory digastric muscles which fuse (partially) with the midline raphe of the mylohyoid muscle. Fibres from the righ...

A fractal anterior digastric: a case report with surgical implications

Introduction The digastric muscle normally consists of a single posterior belly and single anterior belly joined by an intermediate tendon. The anterior belly originates from the digastric fossa of the mandible and inserts at the intermediate tendon to the body and greater horn of the hyoid, the same insertion as the posterior belly; however, the posterior belly originates at the mastoid notch ...

Bilateral variations of the head of the digastric muscle in Korean: a case report

The digastric muscle, as the landmark in head and neck surgery, has two bellies, of which various variations have been reported. In the submental region of a 72-year-old Korean male cadaver, bilateral variations were found in the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. Two accessory bellies, medial to the two normal anterior bellies of the digastric muscle, ran posterior and medially, merging a...

The digastric muscle's anterior accessory belly: case report.

Digastric muscle is characterized by presenting occasional variations. The suprahyoid region of an 83 year-old male cadaver was dissected and an anatomic variation of the digastric muscle was observed in its anterior belly. It consisted of an accessory bilateral anterior belly originating in the intermediate tendon and inserted into the mylohyoid raphe. The implications of this variation are di...

Dual innervations of mylohyoid muscle: a case report.

Mylohyoid and anterior belly of the digastric muscles are supplied by a branch from the inferior alveolar nerve called the mylohyoid branch. Here we present an unusual finding in a 60-year-old male cadaver in which the mylohyoid muscle is supplied by a branch from hypoglossal nerve in addition to its usual nerve supply. Hypoglossal nerve after giving superior root of the ansa cervicalis and mus...
